Most people associate Mongolia with nomadic culture, vast green landscapes, and galloping horses, but Ulaanbaatar City shows us a new angle!

Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia, home to Chinggis Khaan International Airport and the most central and populated area in the country. If you’re visiting Mongolia as a tourist, you’ll more than likely be starting your adventure from Ulaanbaatar, as I assure you there is nowhere else for the planes to land in the vast green plains of Mongolia!
Stroll through Ulaanbaatar Park!

The best thing to do when you first arrive in Mongolia is to visit the Ulaanbaatar Park in the middle of the city. This central park is a local favorite and features stunning walkways, playgrounds, and artistic exhibitions. Centered is the iconic flag of Mongolia raised sky high, and as you walk through the park, you’ll get a good feel of what the vibe is like among these friendly but strong-willed people.
Beautiful Ponds & Gardens

One of the most serene spots at Ulaanbaatar Park is this pond featuring traditional architecture and beautiful gardens. I don’t know much about traditional Mongolian architecture, but the roofing of this shelter definitely gives off an ancient Chinese or Japanese aesthetic, and as do the small bridges crossing over the pond.
The Famous Genghis Khan Statue!

The Genghis Khan statue speaks for itself, a massive monument of national pride and honor dedicated to one of the greatest leaders not just of Mongolia, but of the entire world. Located far out from the main Ulaanbaatar city, it’s one of the finest pieces of craftsmanship and architectural excellence that you’ll see in Mongolia. You can easily book a quick tour to the Genghis Khan statue and get it done in just a couple of hours. Be sure to check out the museum underneath the statue too!
Get Inspired at the International Intellectual Museum!

I never thought Mongolia would be where I find the most interesting and coolest museum I’ve ever been to! The International Intellectual Museum in Ulaanbaatar was a haven of clever inventions and historic artefacts designed by famous Mongolian inventors and artists. In fact, there was an entire floor dedicated to life-sized chessboards with endless themes! Definitely an underrated destination of Mongolia, I highly recommend a visit to this fun museum filled with intellectual and creative fun!
Awesome Restaurants, Amazing Food!

I had the privilege of dining at this beautifully designed restaurant at Ulaanbaatar’s Shangri-La Shopping Mall, quite literally called “Mongolian’s Restaurant.” A traditional Mongolian restaurant, you would feel like you were dining in a museum with the awesome exhibits on display! There were traditional Mongolian clothing, armor, weapons, and household items featured, all giving you a sense of what life in ancient nomadic Mongolia was like.

If the exhibits don’t give you the Mongolia vibes, then the food definitely will! From Mongolia’s famous yak dumplings to their unique Bituu Shul (pastry-covered soup), you’ll find their cuisine to be quite hearty and soulful. A truly delicious meal and a varied menu, you’ll be feasting like a true Mongol nomad at this wonderful establishment in Ulaanbaatar!
