Kazakhstan is a country of religious diversity and freedom, home to beautiful places of worship such as the Central Mosque of Almaty.

Whether it’s the Ascension Cathedral or the Central Mosque, Almaty features a handful of impressive religious structures of worship. I had the pleasure of visiting this breathtaking piece of Islamic architecture during my trip to Kazakhstan in 2025. This mosque was so exceptionally beautiful that it even outcompeted (in my opinion) the mosques of the United Arab Emirates – a full-on Muslim country! That being said, Kazakhstan is still a majority Muslim nation (about 70%), though Christianity is fairly potent too (about 20%), so it’s not too surprising that their mosques and churches are well invested in.
In The Heart Of Almaty!

It’s quite impressive how religious structures are harmoniously woven into the busy metropolitan areas of Kazakhstan, particularly in its former capital, Almaty. It’s also amazing how mosques and churches co-exist so close to one another. In fact, it was within the same hour after visiting Almaty’s Ascension Cathedral that I stumbled upon the bright golden dome and crescent moon of Almaty’s Central Mosque.
The Grand Entrance

From the previous photo, you honestly could not tell how grand an entrance the Central Mosque actually had. However, once you walk around to the front of the mosque, you’ll see a huge vertical frame engraved with Arabic calligraphy. Within the frame is a cut-out that I can only describe as a candle shape, which acts as the front entry to the mosque’s prayer rooms and wash areas. It’s particularly beautiful in the evening when the mosque is illuminated in holy white lights and warm yellow colors, making it both eye-catching and welcoming at the same time.
Tranquil Nights

Central Mosque is more than a place of worship; it’s a calming and tranquil place that welcomes people of all backgrounds and beliefs. The grounds around the mosque have a nice park vibe, decorated with lamposts and lush green trees. You can listen to the adhan (Islamic call to prayer) while sitting on the benches outside. If it’s your first time hearing it, you may find it has a calming musical rhythm to it.
Illuminous Fountains

The tranquility of Central Mosque is only amplified by its wonderful display of illuminating fountains, which oscillate and alternate a spectrum of colors. There is even a clever mosque-themed playground here (I wish I’d taken a photo!), making it a great place to take your children. All in all, regardless of your religious or cultural background, Almaty’s Central Mosque is worth a visit, if not for its beautiful spiritual atmosphere, then surely for its awe-inspiring architectural wonder!
