Ascension Cathedral – The Most Beautiful Church You’ll Ever See!

Religion in Kazakhstan is vast; everywhere you go are beautiful mosques, synagogues, and churches like the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty.

At first glance, you would think you’ve just walked into Moscow City, and for good reason! The Ascension Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox Church in the center of Almaty, the old capital of Kazakhstan. As such, its architectural design is heavily influenced by Russian architecture. The aesthetic use of crosses placed on top of spherical domes and the use of bright color combinations are quite the trademark look of historic Russian buildings.

A Grand Entrance

The entrance into the Ascension Cathedral is, dare I say, holy! You walk in and are immediately blown away by a massive candle-lit chandelier, golden monuments, and stunning wall art featuring prominent religious figures from Russian Orthodox Christianity. Upon entry, women are required to cover their hair with a veil, not so different from the expectations of a mosque. Not to worry, though, as there are veils available for borrowing upon entry into the church.

Beautiful Decorations

I don’t know much about the Christian faith, but I do know quality decoration pieces when I see them! These golden colored candle holders look like the kind of kitchenware you’d see in a royal kingdom, much like the king’s drinking goblet.

Again, I’m not familiar with Christian traditions, but lighting up some candles at the Ascension Cathedral was both enjoyable and spiritually uplifting. For the actual Christians out there, this church is more than a tourist destination, but also a genuine place of worship where you can sit down and pray on the wooden benches provided.

Countless Portraits

Within the Ascension Cathedral are bountiful displays of artworks and portraits of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other notable people of the Christian faith, such as prophets and companions of Jesus. These portraits are beautifully framed in gold borders and decorated with tall candlesticks, creating a calming ambiance optimal for prayer and reflection.

Regardless of whether you consider yourself a religious person or not, I’d highly recommend visiting the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty. You’ll likely feel a strong spiritual presence in the atmosphere, or at the very least, you’ll be awed by its amazing Russian-style architecture and interior design!
