Forever Young – enjoying the cherry festival in rural Australia

Young is a city of vast farmlands in the outbacks of rural New South Wales and home to the annual cherry festival in summer.

For the last few years, my family has been managing a sheep farm in the vast greenlands of Young, a rural town in New South Wales. As such, I’ve had the privilege of coming down from suburban Sydney every so often to explore the Australian countryside, get involved in farm work, and enjoy the annual cherry festival every summer!

The Open Roads

Driving along the open roads can be a therapeutic experience, especially if you live a hectic city life constantly surrounded by noise. There is so much to see in rural Australia, from vast open fields to thick green hilltops. You’ll also see plenty of livestock along the way, including sheep, cows, horses, and even alpacas!

Cherry Season!

As the cherry capital of Australia, Young has been hosting the annual cherry festival every December since the tradition began in the 1850s.

It’s a time when you can get involved in cherry-picking with friends and family and enjoy the many cherry treats that come into season.

From cherry pies to cherry jam, my personal favorite is the cherry soft-serve ice cream for its rich taste and organic ingredients.

The Quiet Life

There’s nothing like the peaceful sounds of Mother Nature to put you at ease and give the mind the clarity it needs.

Personally, I always feel a sense of rejuvenation and increased focus when returning to the Sydney suburbs after a trip to Young.

So the next time you’re in Australia, why not do something different to the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and take a road trip to the outbacks!
